During World War I, The Emperor's Cup was publicly smashed by Marshall, with the intent of donating the gold to the Red cross. It was found out later that it was a gold-plated pewter at worth 35$. Atlantic was sold to James Cox Bradley and the Atlantic was used as a subchaser tender. After World War I, the ship was sold again to Cornelius Vanderbilt. Atlantic did race a little. During World War II, Atlantic was transferred to the U.S. Coast Guard serving as an antisubmarine. Atlantic was brought to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy for sail training after the war.
