Santa Maria is among one of the Spanish ships of the Santa Maria class of Frigates. Ther were six locally built warships based on Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates of the United States Navy.

Santa Maria was launched on May 22, 1982. It was built by Bazan Ferrol of Spain stationed at active Homeport Rota, Spain.

Santa Maria armament features Mk 13 Missile Launcher for the RGM-84 Harpoon SSM and the SM-1MR Standard SAM, MK 75 Oto Melara 76mm Compact Gun, 20mm Meroka 12 barrell AA system, Mk 32 SVIT for Mk 46 Lightweight Torpedoes and SH-60 Seahawk LAMPS III Helicopter. It has a speed of 30+ knots.
