About the B-17F-25 Flying Fortress:

This B-17F-25 model is christened “The Duchess”, as flown by the 358th Bomb Squadron of the USAF in 1944. The bomber’s fuselage and wings are made from die cast metal to add a sense of weight and realism, as well as for strength. The panel lines are delicately engraved, while machine gun turrets are reproduced to fire on enemy fighters, just like on the real plane. The landing gear is fully detailed, allowing the option of displaying the plane in either a taxiing or flying mode. A bombing mode is even possible, as the bomb doors can be displayed open when optional parts are used.

The B-17 was the first mass-produced, four-engine heavy bomber, and it flew countless raids against German and Japanese targets during WWII. The term “Flying Fortress” was coined by a reporter from the Seattle Times when a B-17 rolled out replete with its phalanx of machine gun installations. The B-17 was a tough bomber, though it was not until the advent of P-51 Mustang fighter escorts that it reached its full strategic potential.
